There is no particular formula for acting: Actor Vijay Sethupathi

Goa, During an engaging ‘In-Conversation’ session at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in Kala Academy, Goa, the accomplished actor Vijay Sethupathi, alongside veteran actress Kushboo Sundar, shared insights into their experiences and reflections on their cinematic journey.

Vijay Sethupathi is one of the most versatile actors of the Indian film industry. He has acted in more than 50 films. His first lead role was in Seenu Ramasamy’s Thenmerku Paruvakatru which won three National awards.

Discussing his journey about his acting skills, Vijay Sethupathi stated “I know that I don’t know”. As a versatile figure in the Indian film industry, he revealed that his preparation for roles involves learning from discussions and arguments with great minds in the film fraternity.

 

Addressing the question about his image in various roles, Sethupathi emphasized that audiences are drawn to the story and characters rather than the star of the film. When asked about acting, he emphasised the importance of giving freedom to the mind and ‘to go with the flow’. He further emphasized that “there is no formula for acting” and said that one must fully immerse themselves in living the character.

Discussing his portrayal of a transgender character in the film Super Deluxe, which earned him the National Award, Mr Sethupathi highlighted that he tried to depict the real-life struggles faced by transgender individuals.

While interacting with the participants, he highlighted the importance of keeping the spirit of learning alive to stay grounded.

When asked about his choice of roles as villian, Mr Sethupathi expressed his desire to avoid being confined to specific roles. He emphasized the importance of having the freedom to explore various roles based on the script.

The ‘In-conversation’ and ‘Masterclass’ sessions at IFFI are conceptualized by the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI).
