Kamal Haasan’s evergreen films usually get re-released every year before his birthday, November 7. This year, his film, ‘Virumaandi’ was re-released and received a rousing welcome. Now, producer Kalaipuli S Thanu announced that Kamal Haasan’s ‘Aalavandhan’ will hit the silver screen once again after 22 years on December 8, 2023.

The re-mastered version of Aalavandhan is locked to release on December 8 and the makers have unveiled a new poster. The makers have also released the lyrical video of the song ‘Kadavul Paadhi Mirugam Paadhi’. The song artfully narrates Nandhu’s internal struggles. This track is a metaphorical exploration of the perennial battle between good and evil within a single soul.

Directed by Suresh Krissna, Aalavandhan is written by Kamal Haasan. The film is based on the novel ‘Dhayam’ which was penned in 1984. The psychological action thriller features Kamal Haasan in double role – Vijay Kumar & Nanda Kumar. While the former is an army officer and is set to marry his love Tejaswini (Raveena Tandon), he takes her to meet his twin brother Nandu who has been in mental asylum. Both the brothers have been abused by their stepbrother. In one of the instances, Nandu assumes that Tejaswini is his stepmother’s reincarnation and decides to escape the asylum in order to save Vijay. This leads the thriller into intriguing climax.

The film also stars Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai GS Mani and Milind Gunaji in pivotal roles. It released in theatres in 2001.

‘Aalavandhan’ was also shot in Hindi as ‘Abhay’. The film won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects.
