Jayalalithaa passes away, say local TV reports:The Apollo Hospital, has denied reports of her death and said Jayalalithaa remains critical.
Tamil Nadu’s ‘Puratchi Thalaivi’ (Revolutionary Leader), Jayalalithaa Jayaraman, passed away today following a cardiac arrest in Chennai’s Apollo Hospital, where she was admitted since September 22 this year.
The report of the AIADMK’s demise was reported by at least three south Indian news channels, including Sun TV and Thanti TV. A reporter on Twitter said the party flag has been hoisted down at party headquarters in Chennai.
The Apollo Hospital, however, has denied reports of her death and said Jayalalithaa remains critical. No official announcement has also been made so far.
“A large team of doctors from Apollo and AIIMS continue to provide all life saving measures. #GodblessAmma,” Apollo tweeted.
Meanwhile, violence broke out between the AIADMK workers and the police outside Apollo Hospital as soon as the reports of Jayalalithaa’s demise spread among thousands of supporters camping outside.
Chennai has been put on high alert. “All officers at all levels will be on duty until further orders. The entire city stands mobilised,” City Police Commissioner said.
