COAST GUARD CONDUCTS SPECIAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DRIVE AT MARINA BEACH IN CHENNAI
As a part of the 49th Raising Day celebration of the Indian Coast Guard, Special Coastal Clean-up Drive was conducted at Marina beach and Elliot’s beach on 17 February 2025.
The Regional Deputy Commissioner of Greater Chennai South Shri MP Amith, IAS, was the Chief Guest for the event which was also graced by Deputy Inspector General Satish Kumar, TM, Officer in Charge, Coast Guard Store Depot, Royapuram, Chennai.
The Chief Guest while flagging off the event, addressed the gathering and emphasized on the importance of coastal clean-up and raising awareness about the critical issue of marine pollution as the plastics in the sea/ coast represents a potential threat to marine creatures. He also added, Indian Coast Guard, being the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, has played a significant role in securing the Indian coast and enforcing regulations in the Maritime zones of India.
Around 500 volunteers from different schools and colleges, National Cadet Corps, Central and State Govt. agencies along with ICG personnel participated in the clean-up drive, resulting in the collection of approx 1 Ton Kg of waste including plastics. The collected waste was appropriately disposed of with the assistance of Chennai Corporation.
