Chennai, 2st Oct. 2016
Chennai today witnessed people from all walks of life including students, professionals, social activists, housewives, youth, elders and children participating in a mega walkathon that campaigned for the cause of elderly people and care for them.
As many as 2000 people actively took part in the awareness programme jointly organised by FrontEnders Foundation and Healthabove60 in commemoration of International elders day and to draw attention of the society on different problems faced by the older people across the world. `Take a Stand against Ageism’ is the theme of this year’s international campaign.
Renowned Film Music Director Gangai Amaran flagged off the awareness campaign where participants walked their way from Gandhi Statue at Marina beach to Presidency college and then back to the starting point (totally 3 km distance) to drive home the message.
The event, kick-started at 7 am, saw overwhelming students’ participation from around 30 city colleges, retired associations etc to support the cause. The campaign concluded at 7.50 am. T-shirts, certificates and refreshments were given to the participants.
“Elderliness is the best part of a life to be celebrated while one looks back the path that they have travelled, the lessons they have learnt, the obstacles they went through, creating memories for life for themselves and others. Not only for elders but it is the time to give them back the happiness that was created by them for all of us. Break the taboo of ageism, it is not the time to rest but it’s time to show the world the real spirit of active participation by our elders”.
“But Nuclear family system, fast life and changing lifestyle of today’s world have pushed the life of ageing people to the brink. They are left to lead a life without family support when they need utmost care. This has become a universal problem and affects the physical and psychological well being of elders. Towards sensitization on this growing concern, every year International Day of Older Persons is being observed,” said the organisers.
